Project Lake Retreat
This project was a dream to design—situated on the edge of a beautiful lake, the home is as striking as it is inviting. From the outside, it embraces the timeless charm of a classic barn with its gabled roof, dark wood siding, and oversized windows. However, stepping inside reveals an entirely different story—one that blends rustic warmth with industrial edginess, reflecting the homeowners’ bold personalities.
The heart of the home is the open-concept living space, where exposed steel beams intersect with reclaimed wood ceilings. The floors are polished concrete, which adds a sleek, modern edge while grounding the space in durability. To keep the interior feeling warm and lived-in, we incorporated touches like a floor-to-ceiling plastered fireplace and cozy velvet furniture. The balance of raw and refined elements creates an exciting tension that feels both welcoming and unexpected.
The show kitchen is a centerpiece, with custom oak cabinetry and open shelving made from salvaged barn wood. A simple but striking long wood pendant from Hollis and Morris hanging above the 14 dining table crafted from a single wood slab brings in natural texture, paired with hammered metal legs by Northern iron for a touch of industrial cool. The working kitchen is functional and chef-ready with durable Negresco Black granite counters and ample storage.
The homeowners’ edgy style truly shines in the details. We chose bold and moody tones, paired with unexpected accents like a pair of oversized mirrors flanking the hood. The bathrooms push boundaries with bold animal print wallpaper, floating vanities, and beautiful tile work, creating spaces that feel as daring as they are functional.
This home is a reflection of contrasts—traditional meets modern, rustic meets industrial, and understated elegance meets unapologetic boldness. It feels rooted in its lakeside setting yet unique, just like the homeowners themselves.
